Taking Flight in a Cutting-Edge Field

Students in Drone Course

PROFESSOR ROBERT HEVERLY ’92, who has been serving as the reporter for the Uniform Law Commission’s “Uniform Tort Law Relating to Drones Act,” is co-teaching a new course, The Legal, Ethical, and Operational Impacts of Unmanned Aviation Systems, with a colleague from the University at Albany.

In addition to studying the legal and regulatory aspects of drone operations, students take the controls themselves at UAlbany’s new drone flight facility, and are prepared by the course to take the FAA commercial drone pilot’s exam. “Drone operators must be aware of the regulations that are in place to ensure not only their safety, but the safety of our skies,” Heverly said. “And Albany Law graduates who have taken this course are going to be there on the front lines.”
