The Government Law Center at Albany Law School

Content-0

The Government Law Center helps state and local governments better serve their communities while training the next generation of leaders in public service.

We are a diverse and inclusive group of practitioners, students, and scholars working together to produce high-quality, reliable, nonpartisan legal research and analysis.

Recent highlights include:

  • Our series of Explainers on state and local governments' role in immigration law, including Explainers on "sanctuary" cities and municipal ID cards.
  • A panel discussion on the role of state constitutions after Justice Kennedy's departure from the Supreme Court, co-sponsored with the Rockefeller Institute of Government.  (And see our research paper explaining how the New York State Constitution protects more rights than the federal Constitution.
  • A new resource page for the Rural Law Initiative, our project to support rural communities in New York State:  www.albanylaw.edu/RuralLawResources.
  • The transcript of Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s visit to Albany Law School is now available in the Albany Law Review, along with an introduction by GLC Director Ayers.  For more on the Justice’s visit, click here.

The Government Law Center Fellowship

The Government Law Center Fellowship provides talented students interested in this area of law with exclusive opportunities, such as informal lunches with government attorneys, lawyers for New York State agencies and the Attorney General’s Office, judges, lobbyists, nonprofit leaders and union lawyers. Fellows can also write for one of the Center’s blogs and write more formally on a public policy issue of interest.
